An SUV that changes the game: the 2026 Volkswagen Tayron 195TSI R-Line

Sometimes an SUV can feel like it’s been designed via a checklist. Seven seats, a big boot and enough cupholders for a weekend sports run are all handy, but they don’t automatically make a car enjoyable. The 2026 Volkswagen Tayron 195TSI R-Line changes that.

It tries to bring a bit more personality to the formula, with the space and flexibility families need, paired with a stronger engine and a more confident driving setup. In Volkswagen’s SUV line-up, the Tayron sits between the Tiguan and Touareg.

That means it gives buyers more room than a “Tiggy” without stepping into the full-size feel or higher price bracket of the larger option. In 195TSI R-Line form, it also gets the strongest petrol engine in the range.

That comes in the form of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 195kW and 400Nm, paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. For a seven-seat SUV, it is properly quick.

Volkswagen claims a 0–100km/h time of 6.1 seconds, which means overtaking, merging and carrying a full load should feel much easier than in many family SUVs. On the road, the Tayron should feel strong and composed rather than wild.

The engine has plenty in reserve, the DSG shifts quickly once moving, and the AWD system helps it feel secure when the road is wet, twisty or uneven. The progressive steering should help it feel more manageable around town and more responsive on winding roads.

It will never feel small, but it should feel easier to place than its size suggests. The adaptive suspension gives the Tayron a useful range of personalities. In comfort-focused settings it should settle well on longer drives.

The firmer modes offer better body control when the road gets more interesting. The main compromise is the wheel and tyre package. The 20-inch wheels look great, but the thinner rubber mean sharp bumps and rough suburban roads are likely to be felt more.

Volkswagen lists combined fuel use at 8.6-litres/100km, and the Tayron needs at least 95-octane premium unleaded. That figure is reasonable for the size and performance, but real-world use could climb if it spends a lot of time in traffic or is driven hard.

While it’s not Touareg large, it is a big SUV, yet it never feels overly bulky or awkward around town or in tight car parks. The R-Line treatment gives it a sharper look, with a sportier front bumper, gloss-black lower detailing and a more purposeful rear end.

Those R-Line badges are subtle, and the standard 20-inch wheels suit the body well without looking overdone. Pretty much every colour in the range contrasts nicely with the black details and gives the Tayron a clean, polished look.

Pure White is the standard fare, but you could also opt for Oyster Silver Metallic, Dolphin Grey Metallic, Ultra Violet Premium Metallic (as pictured), Night Shade Blue Metallic or Grenadilla Black Metallic.

The lighting helps lift the design. The matrix LED headlights and rear light signature give the Tayron a more modern presence at night, while details such as privacy glass, matte-chrome roof rails and illuminated door-handle recesses add a more upmarket feel.

There’s a Black Style package for buyers who want a darker, more aggressive look. It swaps in 20-inch York alloy wheels and adds black exterior details, including gloss-black mirror caps, black roof rails and extra dark trim around the R-Line bumpers.

The R-Line comes with the main tech and comfort items already included, such as the larger 15-inch infotainment screen, Harman Kardon audio, a head-up display and the aforementioned lighting. Inside, the dashboard is clean and simple.

Most of the attention goes straight to the large 15-inch central touchscreen. That screen handles most of the major functions, including navigation, audio, climate settings, vehicle setup and drive modes. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with digital radio.

You'll also find Bluetooth and Volkswagen’s voice assistant. The driver gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and everything feels suitably modern. The main benefit is simple: you can see the important stuff without constantly taking your eyes off the road.

Phone charging is well covered, with two wireless spots in the centre console, plus USB-C ports in both rows. The sound system is excellent. The Soul Black cabin looks sporty, though it can feel a little dark without the optional panoramic roof.

Ambient lighting and illuminated R-Line trim help lift the mood at night. The front seats are supportive and packed with adjustment. That includes memory, thigh support, lumbar adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage. The outer second-row seats are heated as well.

The leather-appointed trim mixes real and artificial materials but the overall presentation is still convincing. Details like the heated R-Line steering wheel, stainless-steel pedals, black headlining and soft dashboard inserts help the flagship Tayron feel a step above the entry models.

The second row is practical and flexible. It is split 40:20:40, slides forwards and backwards, and has adjustable backrests, so owners can juggle legroom, luggage space and access to the third row. The latter is best kept for kids or occasional adult use.

With all seven seats up, the Tayron still offers 345-litres of boot space, which is enough for a grocery run or a few soft bags. Drop the third row and boot space grows to as much as 850-litres, with the second row slid forward.

Fold both rear rows and there is up to 1905-litres to work with. Helpful touches like the powered tailgate, hands-free opening, luggage net, shopping-bag hooks and side storage make it easier to live with day-to-day.

It can tow up to 2500kg (braked), which gives it useful headroom for a caravan, boat or larger trailer when properly equipped. At $74,550 before on-roads, the Tayron 195TSI R-Line is a serious purchase.

It’s priced high enough that some will start looking at entry-level luxury SUVs as well. Even so, the Tayron makes a strong case. Not many rivals offer this mix of seven seats, all-wheel drive, performance, a big boot, towing ability and high-end cabin tech in one package.

It’s not trying to be a hardcore performance SUV. Rather, it’s a polished, quick and very capable family car that still has enough power and control to make a good road enjoyable. Put simply, the Tayron 195TSI R-Line makes plenty of sense.
