The 2026 Jaecoo J5 EV Summit isn't trying to be unique for the sake of it, and it’s not trying to look like an overly complicated thing either. Instead it presents itself, at least from a distance, with a silhouette of a clean sensibility.

There’s enough polish that you’ll consider purchasing it because it’s different and new, particularly in the Stormy Blue of our test vehicle. That colour suits the car, giving it more personality (you can opt for Stone Grey, Carbon Black or Arctic White).

The J5, which comes in just one trim, feels familiar too. You could say its look might “Evoque” comparison’s with a certain English brand. Sitting on 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/55 R18 Continental Eco Contact7 tyres, it presents neatly.

At 4,380mm long, 1,860mm wide and 1,650mm tall with a 2,620mm wheelbase, it’s essentially a small SUV. The J5 EV Summit comes with LED daytime running lights, projector type LED headlights, LED taillights, roof rails, a rear roof spoiler, and active air flaps in the front grille.

It gets rain sensing wipers, heated and powered folding mirrors, a power tailgate, a glass roof with a powered sunshade. Hopping inside, our test car had a light-coloured interior with blue piping, which is the kind of combination that looks great in photos but can be slightly scary in real life.

In this case, we found that it didn’t stain as easy as other white interiors and to Jaecoo’s credit, they do make a point of highlighting that the space is pet friendly. The seats are actually TÜV SÜD certified.

For the non-German readers, that is a certification that signifies that they meet several key requirements in regard to safety, reliability and regulatory compliance. It’s a third-party endorsement that is highly regarded. The cabin is a bit schizophrenic though.

From a distance, it looks modern and nicely presented; the big portrait style screen, simple dash layout, ambient lighting and light interior all do a good job of creating an initial premium impression. After a little time with it though, it becomes a little “good from afar but far from good”.

It feels cheap and cheerful, not unlike Jaecoo’s sister brand Chery, and their Tiggo 4 “affordable SUV” offering. It lacks the luxe vibe that other vehicles in their range offer. The equipment list helps claw back some points.

You get a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and an eight-speaker sound system, with all the usual radio options. Bluetooth, steering wheel controls and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all there.

You even get the “Hello Jaecoo” intelligent voice command system, a 50W wireless charger, as well as front USB-A and USB-C. There’s rear USB-A, and 12-volt outlets in the front and boot. Practicality is respectable, with a 384-litre boot (to the cargo cover).

The second row folds 60:40 and there are four cup holders, map pockets, a second row armrest and a luggage area light. The J5 EV is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 155kW and 288Nm.

It sips electricity from a 58.9kWh lithium ion phosphate battery positioned underneath the floor, with a WLTP driving range of 402km. That’s a sensible number for an electric SUV in this class and the LFP battery chemistry should appeal to buyers who like the idea of a less fussy and more durable battery.

Charging is handled through a Type 2 AC port and CCS2 DC charging port. Both are located at the driver’s side front. The brochure lists AC charging at 6.6kW single phase or 10.3kW three phase, while DC fast charging maxes out at 130kW.

Jaecoo claims a 30 to 80 per cent DC fast charge time of around 28 minutes. That’s not ugly. On the road, the J5 EV is at its best when it’s treated like a comfortable, easy going SUV, rather than something pretending to be sporty.

It has Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes, plus three levels of regenerative braking. Macpherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear make it a great daily driver, and the EV powertrain gives you the option of jumping from a relative smoothness to a zippier performance bent at the push of a button.

The steering lets it down however, feeling disconnected and disengaged. It doesn’t make the car difficult to drive, rather it’s missing personality. Around town, most buyers won’t care too much, but if you like to engage with your car, it will bother you.

Where the J5 EV Summit makes a stronger case for your hard earned dollars is in safety and driver assistance tech. A long list includes forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, emergency lane keeping and lane departure warning.

You’ll also find lane departure prevention, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, integrated cruise assist, blind spot detection, lane change assist, rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear cross traffic braking and door opening warning.

Speed limit information, driver monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, 360-degree surround-view monitor, ABS, EBD, brake assist, traction control, hill descent control and hill start assist round out the goodies.

ISOFIX anchors and top tether points provide support for small humans. You get plenty when it comes to ownership support too, including an 8-year unlimited kilometre warranty, 8-years capped price servicing and 8-years roadside assist (with dealership servicing).

The battery is backed by an 8-year unlimited kilometre warranty too. For $36,990 drive away, the J5 EV feels like a car built to win buyers with specification, warranty, equipment and design, rather than outright driving excitement.

As a polished, practical and well equipped electric SUV. it makes sense. As a driver’s car, less so. But for the buyer who wants a car that looks good, is easy to live with and comes loaded with features, the Jaecoo J5 EV Summit has definitely come to play.
