THE CAR
The CX-5 has keyless entry and start, a reversing camera and a push-start button and comes in AWD.
It features MP3/WMA compatibility, Sat/Nav, AUX input, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, nine speaker sound, dual zone climate control air conditioning, cruise control, steering wheel controls, reversing camera, 60/40 split and folding rear seats, remote central locking, power windows and mirrors, height and reach adjustable steering wheel, and a push button start.
DESIGN
The exterior design theme has been christened by Mazda as “Kodo” meaning “Soul of Motion.” Specifically, the styling is inspired by the movements of a cheetah through a powerful, sturdy and agile look.
The outside has a large grille, attractive 19 inch wheels and body colour bumpers.
On the inside there’s a pleasant contrast between the dark seat upholstery and dashboard and the white upper roof area. We particularly like the attractive leather steering wheel, shift knob and handbrake and fabric seats. The leather seats are comfortable and there’s room in the back to fit two adults comfortably.
TECHNOLOGY
Available with all-wheel-drive models only, the 2.2 litre SkyActiv-D common-rail diesel engine delivers a gutsy 129kW at 4500rpm and 420Nm at 2000rpm.
Mated to the six-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission it’s the most eager and responsive engine in this SUV segment.
Up hill and down dale the CX-5 diesel feels strong. It will overtake effortlessly, has no trouble with a family-sized load on board, and is quick and lively around town.
SAFETY
Safety features include six airbags, electronic brake force distribution and ABS technology, brake assist, ESC, traction control. It has a 5 star safety rating.
DRIVING
Making yourself comfortable in the CX-5 is easy, with a height adjustable driver’s seat and a tilt and reach adjustable steering wheel. The driver’s position is high up on the road and provides a good panoramic front view.
In fact, the overall view is stand-out. The front visibility is clear due to the thin pillars and rear visibility is helped by the wide side mirrors, large rear vision mirror.
However, what sets the CX-5 apart is its road handling. The firm steering provides great control around corners and the smooth suspension allows the car to glide over most bumps without the shaking that poor suspension can bring.
VERDICT
It’s unsurprising the CX-5 made it onto the 2012 Car of the Year Top 10.
Mazda seems to have got the formula right for the diesel CX-5.
The interior finish is as Mazda claims ‘a cut above’. With the more potent diesel engine under the bonnet, the CX-5 is the best driving and best-buying SUV from 2012.
