This exceptionally significant early-build 1990 Mercedes-Benz 500SL (R129) is finished in Arctic White (147U) over a Black leather interior (071A), and is one of the very first R129s ever constructed completed in July 1989 and used by Mercedes-Benz as the launch vehicle for the Australian market. It was the actual car displayed at the 1990 Melbourne Motor Show, making it one of the most historically important R129s in the country.

Initially retained by Mercedes-Benz Australia as a factory-held demonstrator and press/show vehicle for the introduction of the R129 series, it was subsequently sold by Lane Motors Mercedes-Benz of South Melbourne on 21 September 1990 to one of Australias well-known billionaires, who retained the car for four years before it was acquired by its most recent long-term owner. It has travelled very low kilometres and is accompanied by an exceptionally complete suite of original documentation.

A Unique Early Production Specification

As one of the earliest R129s off the production line, this example benefits from a number of desirable launch-series details not found on later Australian-delivered 500SLs:

Conventional coil-spring suspension
All Australian-delivered 500SLs were fitted with hydraulic ADS/SLS suspension, well known for its complexity and maintenance cost. This launch-series car was constructed with standard coil suspension, offering simpler maintenance and long-term reliability.

Traditional key-operated central locking
Retains the original non-remote locking system, avoiding the early immobiliser issues sometimes seen on later cars.

Full, non-perforated leather upholstery
A trim style exclusive to the earliest production period.

600SL-style headlamp/windscreen wipers
A distinctive feature seldom seen on Australian cars and indicative of early-build specification.

Manually adjustable day/night rear-view mirror
Early cars did not receive the electric mirror, a feature later discontinued due to frequent failures from incorrect use. The manual unit is more durable, more reliable and preferred by collectors.

These features, combined with its provenance as the Melbourne Motor Show launch vehicle, set it apart from any other 500SL in the country.
