Toyota Australia has about 300 Tundra utes undergoing engineering and development in Australia ahead of an expected launch of right-hand drive versions as early as next year.

The move comes as Toyota in the US unleashes an upgraded Tundra variant for 2024, the 1794 Limited Edition.

The 1794 version is a premium grade on the third-generation Tundra launched a few years ago. It is based on the 1794 grade, but reaches exclusivity as only 1500 will be built.

The name comes from the ranch that Spanish colonist Juan Ignacio built in 1794 in Texas, between the Medina River and Leon Creek. Centuries later, Toyota bought the land and built the San Antonio plant that assembles the Tundra.

It takes the 1794 variant to a higher level, adding standard equipment, including a base of a Crew Max cab, 5.5-foot (1650mm) bed, 4WD, and the I-Force powertrain.

Buyers will have the choice of three powertrains, all 3.4-litre V6 petrol units with two turbochargers. One adds an electric motor for additional power and improved fuel economy. The outputs range from the base 3.4-litre V6 at 358hp (267kW and 550Nm; to the mid-spec 389hp (290kW) and 649Nm and the top-spec hybrid with 437hp (326kW) and 790Nm.

The chassis is upgraded with FOX suspension and an off-road-inspired wheel and tyre combination.

The 2.5-inch diameter FOX Internal Bypass shocks with piggyback reservoirs and a 1.1-inch lift improve the stance of the truck and add to the truck's off-road capability.

It also has an elevated premium leather interior with a design developed through collaboration with the Saddleback Leather Company, which sources its leather for quality, durability, and style.

Buyers of the Tundra version will also be able to option several Saddleback Leather Company accessories to match the ute, including a large overnight bag, tool roll, owners’ portfolio, key glove, and a small pouch.

There are also unique exterior design changes such as the dark chrome grille and body side moldings, blacked-out accents, a unique stamped tailgate, and, inside, an embossed label that marks the truck as one of 1500.

The Tundra 1794 Limited Edition will be available in US dealerships in early 2024. It is available in colours: Wind Chill Pearl, Midnight Black Metallic, Blueprint, and Smoked Mesquite.
