Australia’s new-vehicle market has recorded its strongest ever July result, supported by another strong month for battery electric vehicle sales. A total of 103,656 new vehicles were delivered, surpassing last year's 103,097 benchmark.

The result follows a record ever June and marks two consecutive months where battery electric vehicles represented more than one fifth of all sales. Battery electric vehicle sales from all reporting sources were 23,510 during July, accounting for 21.7 per cent of the entire market.

Year to date, Australians have purchased 127,244 BEVs from all sources, representing 17.3 per cent of the total market. Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive Tony Weber said the July result demonstrated extraordinary resilience in Australia’s new-vehicle market.

“July was another outstanding month for Australian new-vehicle sales and delivered the best July result on record. This strength extended to battery electric vehicles, which accounted for more than one in five new vehicle sales,” Mr Weber said.

“There is a risk that the rapid increase in electric vehicle uptake in 2026 will outpace the supply of public charging infrastructure. Governments and the private sector must work together to ensure that the public charging network meets growing demand particularly in regional areas," he added.

Across the brands, Toyota led BYD, Ford, Kia and Mazda, with Hyundai, GWM, Chery, Mitsubishi and MG rounding out the top ten. The number one selling car in July was the RAV4, ahead of HiLux, Ranger, Sealion 7 and ultra affordable Tiggo 4.

The only non-top ten brand to garner a spot in the individual vehicle sales tally was the Zeekr 7X, which sits ninth in Australia's best selling models in July.
